  • What to Wear to a Winery: A Classic Style Guide for Every Season in St. Helena, CA

The date is set, and you have your winery visit planned. But suddenly you realize you’ve forgotten an important detail – what do you wear to a winery? Winery style doesn’t have to be complicated. Ultimately, the goal is to craft classic looks and style pairings with a unique twist. You want to choose pieces that are casual yet classy, timeless yet not overdone. A winery visit is not a stuffy or formal event, but it is an elevated one. Relaxed but stylish fashion is key to fitting in perfectly at a winery. Looking for inspiration for what to wear to your upcoming wine tasting or winery event? Keep reading for our classic style guide for every season.

What to Wear to a Winery: The Basics

No matter the season, there are a few key rules to keep in mind when styling an outfit to wear to a winery. First up, the ultimate rule of winery style: avoid wearing perfume or cologne. So much of our sense of taste is tied to our sense of smell, and any interference can impact not only your own wine tasting experience, but the experience of those around you. Think of wearing perfume at a winery as wearing a neon minidress to a funeral or a bathing suit to your grandfather’s retirement party – it’s a major faux pas. Instead, bring a small travel size bottle and feel free to apply afterward for the rest of your day. Another cosmetic rule of thumb to keep in mind is to always wear smudge-free lipstick to a winery. After all, you don’t want to leave lipstick residue every time you take a sip from a wine glass. Depending on the winery that you plan to visit, you may want to avoid high heels and opt for flats instead. If you’re going to be touring the winery, heels might not be the most comfortable walking choice, and if you’re visiting a vineyard, the last thing you want to worry about is your heel getting stuck in the grass. Comfortable yet stylish shoes are a better choice for your winery visit. When visiting a winery, it’s always wise to layer. While it may be warm and pleasant outside, you may find the inside of the winery to be significantly cooler, especially if you are touring a wine cellar or cave. Additionally, while the weather in Napa is temperate (with St. Helena trending slightly warmer than the rest of the valley), it does get cooler in the evenings, so it never hurts to have an extra layer to keep warm as the night air starts to cool. Finally, as most wineries do have outdoor components, make sure that you don’t forget the sunblock! There’s nothing like the Napa sunshine, but you don’t want to get burned. V. Sattui’s gorgeous picnic grounds and outdoor tasting events are not to be missed, so apply sunscreen and enjoy while staying safe!

    Winter Winery Looks

Escape the chill and enjoy a winter winery visit. Winter in Napa begins in late November, and goes through January. While temperatures are cooler than the rest of the year, they are still pleasant, with average temperatures in the high 50s and low 60s during the day and the low 40s and high 30s at night. These mild winter days sometimes come with rain and cloudy skies, but the cooler temperatures also mean less traffic and visitors, so you’re likely to have a more private winery experience with less local traffic during the winter months. When styling your winter winery look, lean into muted earth and wood tones, along with holiday colors and jewel tones as the festivities arrive. Textures such as knit or wool also will add contrast to your outfit and keep you both warm and stylish.

Option 1 | Casual – When it comes to women’s winter winery fashion, you can keep things simple with a chunky knit sweater that would make Nora Ephron proud and black jeans. Pair the look with boots and a gorgeous long coat to keep you warm and stylish.
Option 2 | Versatile – For a look that can be dressed up or dressed down, a long skirt and a chic turtleneck is the perfect outfit choice. Lean into neutrals for your base, letting your coat be the statement piece with a pop of color. And if it’s a little extra cold out on the day of your winery visit, you can always wear tights underneath your skirt for an extra layer of warmth.
Option 3 | Elevated – A winery visit is the perfect time to pull out your classiest little black dress. Pair the look with black tights and a camel-colored jacket to stay warm before finishing off the look with chunky gold jewelry. Remember, heels aren’t the best choice if you have to be outdoors, but if you’re hiding away from the cold at an indoor wine tasting, your favorite black heels will tie the look together perfectly.

Option 1 | Casual – For a simple winter winery outfit that is casual but classy, you can’t go wrong with a crewneck sweater over a button-up shirt. Paired with tailored slacks and a comfortable but stylish pair of sneakers, you’ll be ready for wherever your day in wine country takes you.
Option 2 | Versatile – For a versatile men’s look that’s perfect for a winery in the wintertime, utilize basic pieces that can be dressed up or dressed down, focusing on seasonal colors. A dark burgundy is perfect for winter, and pairs effortlessly with white and black pieces. Simple, clean staples are ideal when dressing for a winery, and give you the freedom to spend the rest of your day however you please.
Option 3 | Elevated – Men’s elevated winter fashion is layered with a high-class touch. For your next winter winery visit, consider layering a classy vest over a sleek turtleneck. When finishing the look off with a jacket, give yourself the opportunity to play with textures and patterns that create a unique pairing with the other layers of your outfit. Wear with tailored pants and dress shoes.

    Spring Winery Looks

Spring is the season for watching the world come back to life again, and nothing welcomes the sunshine back in quite like a trip to your favorite Napa winery. Spring in Napa runs from February to May, and it’s an exciting time in the valley as we experience “bud break” and watch our crops begin to thrive for the season. February is Napa’s wettest month, and rain is likely. Spring temperatures generally linger in the mid to high 60s, rolling into the mid 70s as May arrives. The evenings are often still chilly, averaging in the mid to high 40s. The colors of the valley are beautiful this time of year, with greens and yellows everywhere that you turn. Mustard blooms blanket the vineyards, and there’s nothing more beautiful than the California poppies. Bringing these colors into your outfits will set the tone for the season. And amidst the fluctuating weather, don’t forget your layers!

Option 1 | Casual – Spring men’s fashion is light and fun, and this spirit carries over into planning your outfit for a winery. A striped button-down is a classic choice that still infuses your own personality, and slacks and sneakers keep the look comfortable and casual for an enjoyable day at the vineyard.
Option 2 | Versatile – The spring season brings light colors back into full rotation, and your trip to the winery is an excuse to make use of those pieces. Light neutrals enhance the feel of the season, and keep you comfortable on those days that are beginning to creep towards summer.
Option 3 | Elevated – It’s hard to beat a button-up and a crisp jacket for upscale winery attire. Swap the jeans in the image above out for nice slacks, and pair with a classy pair of dress shoes for an elegant and timeless look.

    Summer Winery Looks

There’s nothing like summer in Napa, and it’s the perfect time to plan your wine country adventure. Summer is an ideal chance to relax and unwind, and what better way to do so than with incredible wine in one of the most beautiful places in the world? Summer lasts from June to early August in Napa, and is filled with sunkissed days and warm nights. The temperatures can get rather high, ranging from the high 80s to mid 90s, depending on how far north you travel, but the glorious lack of humidity makes the heat far more pleasant. Evenings bring a break from the high temperatures, generally ranging in the 50s to low 60s. Everything is green in the summertime in Napa, so you can lean into the bright, beautiful saturation of color. Light clothing pieces are your friend in the summertime, and it’s the perfect time to pull out that new sundress or linen button-down.
